TN
That U.S. opportunity is worth a conversation. Explore professional work through the TN pathway.
Enquiries from Thunder Bay usually arrive attached to a date: a lay-up window that opens in January, a terminal purchase closing at the end of a quarter, a rail contract that begins when an American yard reopens. That is a useful way to start, because every U.S. route is a sequence and each one puts a different step first. TN is decided at the moment of admission and can be sought within days once a job genuinely exists. An L petition cannot be filed at all until a corporate relationship exists on paper and a qualifying year abroad has already been served. E-2 wants money irrevocably committed before anyone adjudicates whether it was enough. EB-5 measures a two-year clock from a residence that has not yet begun. Writing down the immovable date, then the earliest step each route demands, usually removes two of the options before anybody has to argue about them.
U.S. visa support for Canadians
ready for what’s next.
A ticketed marine engineer at a drydock, a terminal operations manager whose parent group has just bought an American elevator, and a harbour-services owner who wants a half share of a company across the lake are asking three unrelated questions, and only one of them is really about qualifications. Reading the six route pages against one another shows which fact each category inspects first and which facts it ignores completely, so a first conversation can begin at a real obstacle rather than at an acronym someone repeated at a trade meeting.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
For a Canadian citizen, the profession and the described duties do almost all of the work, and both have to be right before anybody travels.

Two kinds of file come out of a port city. In the first, somebody is employed - on a vessel, in a terminal, in a yard office, in an engineering department - and the employer either has or is about to acquire an American counterpart. That file turns on citizenship, on what the person has actually done for three years, and on whether the American duties match either a listed profession or a qualifying corporate role. In the second, somebody owns the business and would rather own something on the American side of the water. That file turns on where the money originated, how much of the enterprise the buyer will genuinely control, and how many people the business will employ besides the buyer's own household.

A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.
There is nearly always one: a closing, a navigation season, a school year, a contract start, an expiring passport, a child's twenty-first birthday. Put it at the top of the page before anything else is discussed. Each route below can then be judged on whether its sequence can realistically finish before that date, which is a sharper question than asking which category sounds most promising.
One half of any file describes a human being: citizenship on a passport, degrees, licences, three years of duties. The other half describes something outside that person entirely - a written offer, a chain of corporate ownership, a purchase agreement, a bank history. Refusals cluster in the second half, while preparation time tends to be spent on the first.
An L petition needs a qualifying year already served and two related companies already trading. E-2 needs capital already committed and genuinely at risk. EB-5 needs a lawful origin traced forward from where the money was first earned. TN needs a real job in a listed profession. Whichever of those cannot be begun today is what sets your true timetable.
A remote conversation about three facts that no document currently proves is worth more than a general briefing on categories. It should finish as a task list: a letter to be requested, a record to be reconciled, a corporate step that has to happen before any filing, and a decision about whether somebody else in the household changes the order of events.
Each route page and each guide here is built on a different situation - an engineer whose American work exists only during the winter lay-up, a terminal manager whose staff are hourly rather than professional, a buyer who will hold exactly half of an American company - so that the same federal rules can be watched behaving differently against different facts. Read for the situation closest to your own, then mark precisely where yours parts company with it. That divergence is the part that deserves an adviser's attention; the rest is reading.
Find your pathwayConsultations for this area are remote. Shneur Herman, Jo Kubti and Alexander Paton answer the enquiries; there is no office in the city and no meeting available in person here or anywhere nearby. An opening conversation is spent turning a story into a list of facts and marking which of those facts no document currently supports. Where a formal filing follows, carriage of it passes to a licensed U.S. immigration attorney. Nothing published on this site is legal advice about an individual case.

Possibly, because TN admission is granted for a period not exceeding three years and there is no rule against a role that is seasonal in shape. What matters is that each admission is supported by employment that genuinely exists for the period requested, that the profession is a listed one with its credential met, and that the applicant is employed rather than self-employed in the United States. Each arrival is inspected afresh, so the letter and the credentials travel every time.
It puts the whole application on a knife edge. The enterprise must be at least fifty percent owned by nationals of the treaty country, and the investor must be in a position to develop and direct it, which ordinarily means at least half the ownership or demonstrable operational control. An exactly equal split can satisfy that on paper and still fail if a shareholders agreement, a casting vote or a management contract leaves control with the other side.
Headcount is not the test. Managerial capacity can rest on supervising and controlling the work of professional or supervisory employees, or on managing an essential function of the organization at a senior level, and it excludes first-line supervision of non-professional staff unless the people supervised are themselves supervisors or professionals. A terminal role often qualifies as function management rather than people management, and the petition has to be built on whichever description is true.
No. This area is served entirely at a distance, without premises or any in-person appointment, and none of the three consultants is based here. Enquiries are answered by Shneur Herman, Jo Kubti or Alexander Paton, and where a filing has to be made a licensed U.S. immigration attorney is brought in to take responsibility for it.
